Despite initial excitement surrounding Josh Brolin’s potential casting as Hal Jordan, the actor has reportedly decided against joining the Green Lanterns series.
It was recently confirmed that Josh Brolin, who previously played the villainous Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has landed a role in DC’s Green Lantern series, this time taking on the iconic character of Hal Jordan. Although offered as a suggestion rather than a commitment, the actor’s involvement had been in question; according to The Hollywood Reporter, he has reportedly relinquished his role. Without providing additional particulars from THR, it remains unclear why Brolin might have relinquished the role – this marks his fifth portrayal of a comic book character on screen, making it possible he seeks to diversify his filmography.
DC Studios is likely on the hunt for another Hal Jordan, possibly having already explored various ideas. According to trade insider Jeff Sneider’s paywalled column, The Insider, Ewan McGregor, known for his role in Star Wars, and Matthew McConaughey, of Interstellar fame, are being considered for a part if Chris Brolin turns it down. If Schneider is accurate, one could reasonably expect both of these characters to emerge since they are fundamental components of the traditional comic book archetype.
While attention is scarce at this juncture, an official logline has been released: “The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan as they investigate a murder in the American heartland, delving into a dark, earth-based thriller.” No updates on casting for fan-favorite Green Lantern incarnation John Stewart yet, but considering the show’s release date is far off, DC still has ample time to find the perfect fit.
