A report has emerged shedding light on the alleged development of Crash Bandicoot 5, following earlier claims that such a game was in the pipeline.
Again in July, a developer previously working on Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time for Toys For Bob revealed that a new Crash game was in development, but provided few details about it. They knew that eventually, people would discover the truth and “it’s going to break hearts,” which now seems prophetic, as Liam Robertson’s latest video at Did You Know Gaming reveals cancelled Crash 5 details, including the most striking aspect: a crossover with none other than Spyro the Dragon, PS1 co-star of the bandicoot.
While it’s true that Crash and Spyro have collaborated on various projects, this forthcoming title promises something unique: a genuine 3D platformer in the vein of their iconic series, with all the nostalgic charm that implies. According to the report, a potential sports game would have served as a direct sequel to Crash 4, featuring concept art and narrative details showcasing both familiar and new antagonists; it would also draw inspiration from the PS2 installment, Crash Twinsanity.
The Spyro crossover game allowed for an exciting twist: players could take on the roles of individual characters, seamlessly transitioning between each other’s worlds while also collaborating through team-up attacks. The tone of the sport would have been even more ominous, as the richly detailed lore of the video games would have played a crucial role in its development. Since Crash Bandicoot 4 did not transcend pre-production, Activision was allegedly unimpressed with its lackluster sales following a predictable launch. The Sane Trilogy’s remake took a bold step by embracing a live-service model as an alternative approach.
Crash Team Racing’s live-service mode, dubbed Crash Workforce Rumble, did indeed launch as a new feature; unfortunately, it ceased to receive updates after just under a year. However, live-service is undoubtedly not a misguided factor for the video game’s business to pursue.
Whether the tip refers to Crash or Spyro remains unclear. While Toys For Bob is working on a fresh project, sparking speculation that it might be a new Spyro game, only time will tell for now.
