Marvel’s Wolverine, an eagerly anticipated game from PlayStation and Insomniac, has allegedly experienced a significant change in creative direction. Following his departure from the sport, former inventive director Brian Horton is no longer involved, having shifted his focus to lead the Good Darkish reboot currently in development at Xbox.
Although each video game is still uncertain in terms of their release timing, Good Darkish recently debuted at the summer’s Xbox Showcase with a first look at its gameplay, following reports suggesting that development wasn’t progressing smoothly? Marvel’s Wolverine, reintroduced in 2021, has remained largely out of sight since then, with its only notable appearance being in discussions surrounding last year’s Insomniac hack.
Notably, following Sport File’s report, renowned game developer Brian Horton takes a bold step by forging a captivating link between the two prominent initiatives undertaken by Sony and Microsoft, the leading console manufacturers. According to reports, Jordan Horton, previously named creative director of Marvel’s Wolverine when it was first announced, has been “off the project” since summer. Following this, he took on a creative director role for Good Darkish, a collaboration between The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics being co-developed.
A Microsoft representative officially transferred Horton’s project file to Sports, stating he will likely “contribute his extensive experience” to the revamped Undercover Agent series – a euphemism for enthusiastically welcoming him aboard. With experience at Crystal Dynamics under his belt, Horton is no stranger to the studio’s inner workings, having previously served as game director on Rise of the Tomb Raider.
His departure has seen a management rejigging for Wolverine, with the report citing Marcus Smith and Mike Daly as having taken up the positions of inventive director and sport director on the sport respectively, roles they beforehand held on Ratchet & Clank: Rift Aside. Cameron Christian, the innovative sports director behind Wolverine’s success, has surprisingly opted to remain with Insomniac, albeit in a yet-to-be-disclosed “entirely new role”.
Sources have reportedly told Sport File that the managerial changes on Wolverine stem from innovative roster choices in the sport.
With upcoming releases often subject to uncertainty due to labor disputes, we’ll need to wait and observe how strikes impact the game’s development and what the final product looks like when it’s eventually released. While that won’t stop people discussing their favorite online gaming community on social media in the meantime, what can you really do about it, though?
