Companies’ propensity for misconstruing digital reality by employing branding tactics rather than genuine training is a source of tedium for me.
Tech giants like Apple and Meta invest heavily in advertising and marketing departments, as well as robust legal teams, striving to instill the vision of their executive leadership on the public sphere? Terms like “blended reality,” “spatial computing,” “augmented reality,” and the “metaverse” are brandished as battle standards, veiling the true nature of their endeavors.
Two Western tech giants are poised to revolutionize personal computing with identical products, catering to a broad audience by offering a high-end, premium product and an affordable option that bridges the price gap. During my time at Meta, I had the opportunity to discuss Kent Bye’s oral history mission with him, as well as converse with Anduril founder Palmer Luckey about his project on the floor at AWE several months prior. While shopper headsets share some technological similarities with those used by drone operators, the two applications have distinct differences in terms of functionality and purpose.
Battle
While we refer to these head-mounted displays as First Individual Viewers, a crucial differentiator from consumer VR headsets lies in their being single-purpose devices rather than traditional general-purpose computers. As substitutes for traditional multitasking computing power, these drones are equipped with long-range antennas that enable operators to immerse themselves in the physical body of high-speed flying machines packed with explosives?
When you connect an antenna to a general-purpose PC such as the $300 Quest 3S, it enables the device to receive and transmit radio frequency signals. This allows the PC to engage with various wireless technologies, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or even satellite communications. The antenna plays a crucial role in amplifying and directing these signals, thereby improving the overall performance and reliability of the wireless connection. Compared to dedicated FPV headsets, this solution offers several key benefits: The Anduril team’s website provides a comprehensive overview of their command and management approach, which is consistent with their previous Quest 2 initiative.
A constellation of aircraft or orbiters can capture a bird’s-eye view from afar, tracing the landscape’s perimeter and recording every person within its bounds. Such a software, presenting the physical world before you akin to the chess pieces on a game board, may resemble the popular app Wooorld, offering one of the best mixed reality experiences, where users relive their childhood homes or engage in geography quizzes with friends.
Above the 3D map, a high-definition digital display, equivalent to a 70-inch TV mounted on a wall, will showcase a real-time feed from a remotely controlled drone descending upon its ground-based objectives with explosive precision.
Meta’s latest updates to Quest headsets, which now enable multitasking on Horizon OS, will potentially introduce aspect panels featuring context-specific data and real-time views of backup drones. Why bother with complex tactics when you can easily control a lone, missile-carrying drone? As the aircraft hurtles towards its explosive demise, the pilot’s gaze shifts swiftly to the instrument panel. As planes disintegrate mid-air, they eerily replicate the suicidal dives of WWII kamikazes, minus the presence of a pilot, whose absence seems almost deliberate, given the aircraft’s pre-programmed descent into oblivion.
AI
Automation has already taken control, rendering pilot decisions obsolete and echoing the apocalyptic warning of “A Taste of Armageddon” from the 1967 Star Trek episode. Can virtual reality’s digital landscape suddenly turn deadly, hurling you into an incinerator as a consequence of a computer’s misinformed decision to detonate a digital bomb that shouldn’t have been triggered? As we progressively delegate human decision-making to artificial intelligence, it is inevitable that we will need to investigate where AI-driven choices terminate and human judgment begins, as well as the complex interplay between the two.
As I pose this inquiry, my intention is to spark curiosity among others, encouraging them to examine it more closely.
I begin by examining the perimeters of human agency, only to find that the consequences of this phenomenon trickle down to the most minute aspects of human existence, as people immerse themselves in virtual reality through head-mounted displays. When wearing an extended reality headset with a field-of-view that effectively blocks out the physical world, and perceiving this environment as a portal or gateway to another location, you start to notice a profound impact here. As companies strive to align their branding efforts with scientific concepts and futuristic narratives, they may begin to overlook the nuances of actual analytical frameworks and sci-fi tropes.
Transportation
When Tim Prepare dinner cancelled a car mission to focus on virtual reality, he spotted the vast potential of VR by shipping headsets to early adopters? After visiting Valve’s office at Oculus in 2014, Mark Zuckerberg recognized an opportunity that prompted him to attend Stanford University, mirroring the path I followed by interviewing Brendan Luckey and speaking with Stanford’s lead virtual reality researcher in 2012 for my initial comprehensive piece on the subject.
As a direct consequence of the 20th century’s reliance on fuel-hungry vehicles and mass media televisions, today’s communities face devastating weather events, including hurricanes that ravage homes, leaving parents anxiously worried about their children’s safety on streets in front of their own properties? As perspectives evolve, recognizing our current fixation on 20th-century applied sciences may lead one to forecast their inevitable obsolescence once baby boomers, the driving force behind these innovations, depart the scene; this realization can broaden your gaze to both the short-term and long-term possibilities that await.
By the 21st century, it is crucial that Americans possess the capability to traverse the country effortlessly via autonomous vehicles traveling at speeds of 100 miles per hour while seated comfortably in the rear compartment and immersed in an expansive field of vision through a high-resolution head-mounted display throughout the entirety of their journey. With immersive headset technology, you can engage in realistic combat by using your hands to manipulate a virtual slingshot, firing projectiles that soar through the air as you defend your vehicle against aerial attacks from a simulated dragon. Experiencing the thrill of VR in a climate-controlled environment where warm or cool air can be adjusted to one’s comfort, creates an immersive atmosphere akin to the cutting-edge events like SIGGRAPH, where attendees have long sought to fully engage with innovative technology. As the icy chill of the moon’s night air caressed your skin, or the fiery warmth of dragon’s hearth enveloped you in its cozy embrace, the confined space of an autocar became a sanctuary against the elements.
Are you considering a timeline that’s farther than you’d like to go? Imagine yourself comfortably seated in a self-driving Waymo vehicle, effortlessly navigating the bustling streets of downtown Los Angeles as you immerse yourself in an immersive virtual reality experience. Alphabet can reinvigorate your view of an entire city by taking historic images and maps and reskinning them to resemble a 1920s landscape, reminiscent of its Road View and Google Earth merchandise. Are VR headsets actually time machines?
The mantra “Defy Distance” once resonated deeply within Oculus’s walls, perfectly encapsulating the creative ambitions of developers striving to craft immersive experiences that inspire, captivate, or stir emotions by subverting spatial boundaries and manipulating perspective.
Many individuals have theories about the most effective approach to improve transportation systems. Alright, self-driving vehicles, hyperloops, and don’t get me wrong; I genuinely appreciate innovative ideas like those. However, as Mark Zuckerberg noted at the outset of our conversation, it’s 2017 and the most significant trend in transportation is that it’s much easier to manipulate bits than atoms.
Intercourse
Adults can engage in virtual reality experiences that revolutionize the way they interact sexually, offering a far more immersive and intense form of intimacy compared to traditional “sexting” practices. With Bluetooth connectivity, associates can control and coordinate the actions of others remotely in real-time, as if they were physically present. While it’s become an increasingly ubiquitous aspect of modern intimacy, few people realize the sheer scale of this phenomenon, with OnlyFans’ $6.3 billion in gross revenues for 2024 serving as a telling indicator of its reach. Given the vastness of our desires, Virtual Reality bridges gaps, enabling immersive experiences that transcend physical boundaries, ensuring both safety and satisfaction without risking health complications or unwanted pregnancies.
What’s at stake when we entrust the foundation of human connection – our most fundamental interactions – to the digital realm as a mediator, rather than fostering authentic relationships in person? While some people bemoan the rise of swiping through images to form initial connections, many still crave tangible interactions, valuing the subtle cues and chemistry that can only be gleaned from in-person encounters before investing in meaningful relationships. As virtual reality reshapes the dynamics of this particular sport, let’s explore how personal connections and individuals evolve over time.
What’s crucial to acknowledge here is that this metamorphosis has indeed gained significant traction.
Video games
As immersive technologies like virtual reality continue to revolutionize the way we experience entertainment, social interactions, and even education, it’s no wonder companies and individuals alike are pouring resources into developing engaging video game experiences that capitalize on this transformative trend.
While video games are undoubtedly enjoyable, it’s crucial to acknowledge that they’re one aspect of this transformative era that doesn’t fundamentally challenge most people’s worldview? While video games may hold a significant place in many people’s lives, it is unlikely that exploring this topic will precipitate widespread cultural or societal upheaval.
Despite this, in embodied virtual reality, the concept of “video games” is redefined, departing from our conventional understanding. When you genuinely feel like you’ve slipped into the role of a legendary hero like Batman or Iron Man, what’s actually happening is that you’re fully embodying their persona, rather than simply “playing along” as them. You the character.
What if we transformed these virtual realms into actual public playgrounds, accessible and inviting for all? While many of these areas are typically populated by children, it is essential that the majority of individuals and caregivers consider how the concept of embodiment affects their perception of these spaces and the interactions within them?
The free-to-play areas are also home to a small but notable number of adults who assume the roles of children. In virtual reality environments, it’s crucial to recognize that individuals struggling with mental health issues can easily go undetected – unlike in physical settings where red flags are often apparent from a distance. With inadequate security settings, even an individual exhibiting concerning behavior could potentially be out of sight and earshot from concerned parents or guardians, leaving them oblivious to the unfolding scenario? While many parents believe that social media’s default security settings provide sufficient protection for their children, others may not share this view.
Revenue
Over a decade-long tenure at this reputable media organization, I’ve had the privilege of spotlighting the innovative efforts of visionary creatives who take calculated risks in their pursuit of artistic excellence. While the core focus of my endeavors revolves around highlighting the constraints that creatives inevitably encounter due to the stringent requirements and gatekeeping measures imposed by industry giants such as Apple, Valve, Google, and Meta – namely, their propensity to steer projects through designated channels and adherence to rigid policies.
From these tools come companies intended to assist builders and provide security to their customers. These tools, however, also shape habits through secondary mechanisms.
As the year progresses, concerns are mounting among developers that Meta is placing greater emphasis on promoting its free-to-play Horizon Worlds experience at the expense of innovative paid projects from other creators supporting Quest. The abrupt transformation is disrupting established networks and threatening economic stability by stripping them of their anticipated revenue streams, as the altered dynamic deprives them of the eyeballs and wallets they had counted on for each new Meta headset release.
As we continue to showcase innovative creators on an ongoing basis, I invite you to join the UploadVR community and remain part of our journey in highlighting exceptional artists and their outstanding projects. While we’re committed to staying focused on our current priorities, it’s essential to acknowledge that a $300 VR headset isn’t revolutionary like the introduction of the Nintendo Switch – at least, not yet in the historical records and for your benefit. The innovative infrastructure driving a seismic change in societal behavior, akin to the transformative impact of the printing press.
Would you consider gifting a VR headset to your infant without first thoroughly examining the pros and cons of this technology, thereby neglecting to prepare yourself, your family, and your children for the transformation already unfolding in realms many people prefer to keep under wraps?
