After a decade-long hiatus, signs of renewed vitality are emerging from the franchise. Ubisoft’s iconic mascot, Mario, is reportedly set to star in his own game after a successful expansion last year.
A recent leak suggests that a remake is in development at Ubisoft Milan, with series creator Michel Ancel acting as an advisor on the project. His involvement has raised concerns among team members due to prior allegations of toxic management practices.
Ubisoft has officially substantiated these claims through a formal press announcement. A Ubisoft consultant, speaking to journalist Stephen Totilo on Twitter, revealed that the company’s Milan and Montpellier studios have recently initiated a research phase on a model, with the project still in its early stages.
The consultant explicitly verified that Ancel is indeed working on the project to ensure consistency within the universe.
Despite the ambiguity, it seems that a fresh start or reboot is in the offing, at the very minimum, given these concrete hints.
