With the massive success of the Fallout: London mod, several prominent voices have joined its core cast, lending their talents to this ambitious project.
Baldur’s Gate 3 surprised fans with unexpected celebrity cameos, including Neil Newbon and former UK Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow, whose iconic “Order!” outbursts have become a cultural phenomenon in Britain. The actors’ surprise appearances in popular films were a result of clever negotiations and creative collaborations between the filmmakers, agents, and talent representatives.
Dean “Prilladog” Carter, venture supervisor of Fallout: London, discussed the mod’s performance in an interview with VG247, also touching on upcoming updates, including the reduction of quest lines to be implemented in a future patch.
As the modder reflected on the unexpected delay resulting from the subsequent generation replacement, they noted that the pause allowed them to refine their methods through repeated playtesting. The idea for incorporating a well-known voice actor originated from a casual conversation between the modder and Callum, the top author and head scripter, who were sitting together when someone mentioned John Bercow. After they suggested, ‘why don’t we just reach out’, we did, and he agreed.
“He uttered, ‘This could be an intriguing situation,'” Carter noted. As the community coordinator for our Fallout 4 mod team, I needed to determine whether our endeavour was a business venture or not. When asked about it, we clarified that we were simply volunteers, driven by a passion for gaming and creativity. To facilitate understanding, we defined what a mod is and what Fallout 4 entails. The interested party agreed, finding the concept “enjoyable”, and kindly provided us with some voice recordings to work with.
While transiting through Newbon, Crew Folon found themselves in the unexpected situation of being unable to make contact as expected. “I’m prepared to face the wrath of my crew when I reveal that I had no idea who he was,” Carter confided in me. Without much fanfare, he unexpectedly connected with us on Twitter, expressing a vague interest in getting involved, but his message got lost among the many similar ones we receive daily.
As the situation unfolded, I suddenly found myself receiving an email from Neil Newbon while simultaneously streaming live. My team was frantically telling me, “Hey, why’s Neil Newbon in your inbox?” and I’m thinking, “I get it.” They were like, “No, no, it’s actually Neil Newbon,” and I’m saying, “Okay, I’ll respond then” – but my team was begging me to reply and get him on board.
We offered him a limited role, essentially a minor contributor to the overall outcome. With unrelenting enthusiasm, he championed Barry the Boat, driven by a deep affection for the whimsical charm she embodied. The Barry the Boat quest originated primarily from Neil Newbon’s creative vision, driven by his desire to expand the project’s scope and depth. A modding project was born out of necessity, with the creator noting that they had to document the quest due to its complexity, stating: “We ended up having to jot down this entire quest as a result of him needing extra stuff to do.”
