MAPPA, the acclaimed animation studio behind hits such as Jujutsu Kaisen and Attack on Titan, has been tapped to produce a remake of the classic anime series Ranma ½ for Netflix.
Last month, to commemorate the iconic Ranma 1/2 anime, it was announced that the original series is receiving a brand-new adaptation. While little information was initially disclosed, recent revelations have shed light on the forthcoming adaptation, with Mappa, the relatively newer and edgier player in the anime industry, confirmed as the sole production company handling the project. A main trailer has been unveiled, providing a first glimpse into the new series. It’s not unexpected that it appears pleasant.
The brief trailer promises an abundance of fights, mishaps, and excitement from the get-go, giving off a strong impression as a robust adaptation – particularly, I’m enthralled by the vibrant colours, which successfully evoke a modern take on 80s/90s anime colouring. Can we make a splash with vibrant colors and leave dullness behind?

Notably, the project boasts impressive connections, with many original cast members set to reprise their iconic roles. The production team behind the anime has announced that certain modifications have been made, although the exact reasons are unclear; nonetheless, it appears that most fans will likely find this news welcome, particularly those who followed the original series.
With Konosuke Uda, an early One Piece anime director, at the helm of this project, Kimiko Ueno (Scrumptious in Dungeon) pens the sequence, while Hiromi Taniguchi (FLCL’s costume designer) handles character designs and Kaoru Wada (Inuyasha) composes the music.
On the opening entrance, another notable presence is Ano, a familiar face to fans of Chainsaw Man’s Chu and Tayousei ending, as well as recent lead roles in Life Dead Demons Dededede Destruction.
When Mappa outlines the narrative, he notes that Ranma Saotome and Akane Tendo, students at the esteemed Tendo Dojo, have been arranged in marriage by their parents, a union sealed through a formal betrothal ceremony. Despite his many strengths, Ranma’s life is marred by a singular peculiarity: whenever he comes into contact with cold water after falling into Jusenkyo’s cursed springs during a coaching trip in China, his body inexplicably transforms into that of a woman, only to revert back to its boyish form when exposed to hot water. Get ready to revel in the hilarious, adrenaline-fueled romantic comedy featuring the iconic duo Ranma and Akane, alongside a colorful cast of unforgettable characters!
Since the wait isn’t as long, you don’t need to attend to everything in detail, because the show is releasing on Netflix on October 5 of this year.
