The Russos’ latest film, exploring an alternate historical past where Disneyland animatronics unexpectedly develop sentience and spark a rebellion, has unveiled its first glimpse.
Imagine a world where Disney’s pioneering work on animatronics for Disneyland unexpectedly gave rise to intelligent robots that turned against their creators. As humans and machines clashed, the ensuing battle left only defeated robots stranded in an “exclusion zone” – a desolate southwestern desert wasteland, banished from society. Primarily based on Simon Stålenhag’s acclaimed graphic novel, the concept is monumental in scope, garnering a prominent feature at Vanity Fair, where the Russos and cast members shared insights into their highly anticipated Netflix film.
The Russo brothers are set to return for future Avengers movies following their latest project, The Electrical State, which Anthony has called “a fascinating prelude” to revisiting the Marvel universe and building upon its story. According to Anthony, working on this massive undertaking reinvigorated the pair’s enthusiasm for tackling a Marvel project once more: “This was unintentional just a few months ago, but this film is definitely an outstanding form of bridge for us back to that.”
The film also features some familiar faces, including Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown as Michelle, a determined young woman searching for her presumed-dead brother. You’ve also brought aboard Chris Pratt to play Keats, a battle-hardened veteran who’s traded in his robotic warfare experience for a life of long-haul trucking and illicit activities – all with the help of Herman, a machine voiced by Anthony Mackie, the future Captain America. Surrounding this strong foundation are additional notable actors, including renowned talents such as Brian Cox, Woody Harrelson, Giancarlo Esposito, and the versatile Ke Huy Quan.
The electrical state is expected to premiere on Netflix early in 2025, with no specific launch date announced as yet.
