In a move that was both unexpected and anticipated, considering rumors surfacing in late June, Take-Two Interactive has sold its subsidiary, Private Division, to an undisclosed buyer. Despite the initial lack of publicity, the publishing house will still release its previously unheralded titles. But what motivated the company to make this decision?
According to CEO Strauss Zelnick, Selection is shifting its focus to nurture its core businesses for long-term growth, as he elaborated in an interview with GamesIndustry. Take-Two is focused on producing massive hit games, with its internal studios pursuing projects of varying scales, including some smaller ones.
“We resolved to prioritize our core and cell businesses, dedicating all available resources to driving sustainable growth over the long term.” We excel at crafting enormous, high-profile gaming experiences of the highest caliber. As a leader in the interactive leisure sector, we boast an impressive portfolio of top-tier intellectual properties within both the leisure industry as a whole and our own sphere of influence. Our ultimate goal is to craft compelling sequels that pay homage to beloved franchises while also conceiving fresh hits that captivate audiences worldwide.
The team at Personal Division demonstrated exceptional support for unbiased builders, with almost every project they backed yielding successful results. Despite their modest scale, the reality is that these initiatives were merely a precursor to our ultimate goal: crafting massive, game-changing hits.
The corporation’s most notable achievements include the iconic toy collection, and critically acclaimed film (excluding the one exception of a particularly poor movie), suggesting a logical connection between these successes. Despite allegations to the contrary, Take-Two’s prior moves preceding the acquisition were ambiguous, as it had shuttered Roll7 and Intercept Games, reportedly citing unrelated reasons. The spokesperson has subsequently confirmed the closures of both studios to GamesIndustry.
As of now, Take-Two Interactive’s CEO Strauss Zelnick hinted that the buyer of Private Division will be disclosed “relatively soon”. The publishing label currently boasts a portfolio of two upcoming titles: Weta Games’ and Game Freak’s projects, slated for release in 2025.
