As the October 17, 2024 launch date approaches, Nintendo has thus far provided few concrete details beyond character announcements – with Pauline being a notable exception. Notwithstanding this, a current game preview has garnered our attention, as it substantiates the promise of online multiplayer capabilities. While initial impressions may suggest that sofa co-op is all this game has to offer in terms of multiplayer, the truth is far more comprehensive. In reality, an online mode for up to 20 players was first teased in the original announcement trailer.
In the 20-player Koopathon, players compete against 19 randomly selected opponents from around the globe, engaging in a variety of minigames to earn cash and advance their game pieces across the board. Occasionally, “Survivathon” mini-games will directly challenge players to compete against each other, with losing players being sent back to the start and the first one crossing the finish line claiming victory.
Nintendo reaffirms that up to eight players can team up in its online multiplayer mode, with the possibility of couch co-op experiences going online still under wraps. (We have contacted Nintendo’s public relations department and are prepared to update this webpage as soon as we gather additional information.)
The Bowser Kaboom Squad mode is exclusive to associates and involves collecting bombs and gadgets to defeat Imposter Bowser while alternating between battles and minigames, which collectively prepare players for an anticipated cooperative showdown. Whether more details drip out before launch remains to be seen.
