Disney has unveiled a sneak peek of its live-action Lilo & Stitch remake, and it’s leaving fans feeling a tad uneasy.
Last week, we got a glimpse of the trailer for one beloved animated movie that’s being transformed into a live-action remake (How to Train Your Dragon), and now we have another one, this time from Disney instead of DreamWorks.
Disney’s Muppet Babies unveiled a 30-second teaser featuring Baby Gorgon (Sew) impersonating Godzilla, wreaking havoc on an elaborate sand fortress resembling Disney’s iconic castle, amidst other creatively constructed sandcastles. Beyond a minimalist setup featuring a CGI character situated within a void to collaborate with accompanying textual content – specifically the release date, May 23, 2025, by design – little else can be found. A rather candid initial glance!
A new film in the Lilo & Stitch universe follows the unlikely friendship between a socially isolated human girl named Lilo and an experimental being resembling a dog, Stitch, engineered to wreak havoc on the world. Director Chris Sanders returns to voice Stitch, teaming with Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell with Sneakers On) to bring this intergalactic tale to life.
In a bold departure from the original, Maia Kealoha, a first-time actor, is set to bring Lilo to life on screen, while Sydney Agudong (of On My Block fame) takes on the role of Lilo’s older sister, Nani. Zach Galifianakis lends his voice to Jumba, while Billy Magnussen plays Pleakley. Hannah Waddingham also joins the cast as the Grand Councilwoman, a character yet to be fully introduced.
As the upcoming film’s release date draws near, it’s likely that a full-length trailer will debut in less than a year. In the interim, Disney is capitalizing on holiday fervor by releasing Moana 2, which hits theaters this week.
