Disney has cancelled its unannounced December 2026 Star Wars film, reportedly replacing it with a more family-friendly project that is expected to perform well.
With the release of Rise of Skywalker, Star Wars finds itself in an uncertain position, as most new canon content has shifted to television shows rather than films. With no recent film and drawing from contemporary stories, it’s evident that Disney is exploring strategies for moving forward with its cinematic endeavors in a manner that aligns with its current narratives. Despite recent uncertainty, the franchise has taken a decisive step by canceling one of its forthcoming Star Wars films. The film’s release date had originally been set for December 18, 2026, though the project’s true purpose remains unclear – some speculation surrounds its potential as a solo Rey feature, albeit one experiencing internal creative challenges; however, any uncertainty is now moot in light of recent developments.
What’s changing is what’s possible you’ll ask? Here’s a new one: As Disney recently announced, another Ice Age installment is on its way, a series I’m sure you all look back on fondly, yet might not immediately associate with itself, “wait, there have been five of these?” It makes sense as a December launch, perfectly timed for the holiday season. However, it’s somewhat humorous to pivot from Star Wars to Ice Age 6.
Technically, the most recent entry in the sequence is the 2022 film The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild, although its Disney+ exclusive release might have led to some viewers missing it.
The earlier installment was Ice Age: Collision Course, released in 2016. As a result, when Ice Age 6 arrives, it will mark the end of a full decade since the last mainline entry.
Despite the anticipation, Star Wars enthusiasts, rest assured that you won’t have to wait until 2026 for a new installment, as several films are already on the horizon. Proper now, The Mandalorian and Grogu, its precise identity, are slated for a May 2026 release, with more in development; perhaps Disney can successfully navigate getting Star Wars back onto the big screen once more? Although I am not inserting any bets,
