Sony has unveiled its latest standalone headset, the XYN, and our team recently had the opportunity to put the latest prototype through its paces.
Don Hopper, UploadVR’s expert contributor, reports live from CES 2025, where he was present for Sony’s official unveiling of its XYN headset – dubbed “zin” by the company, although it remains technically a prototype. The headset made its debut at CES a year ago, and we had a brief opportunity to test an early prototype during the summer.
Sony announces its latest headset, a “spatial content material creation system” driven by Qualcomm’s XR2+ Gen 2 chipset – also employed in Samsung’s headset – featuring cutting-edge 4K micro-OLED displays.
In the final 12 months, the innovative headset was successfully tested with two controllers – one handheld and the other worn as a wristband in a ring-like configuration. The ring controller was no longer synchronized with Don’s demo, instead relying on the held controller for its timing.
The video from Don fails to accurately capture his initial impressions of the hardware, seamlessly transitioning from discussing the headset’s features to demonstrating its capabilities by moving an object in VR using the controller.
We’ve trimmed just a few seconds from the video to enhance readability, allowing you to experience Sony’s new platform in real-time for the first time.
This innovative gadget’s unique controller design showcases Sony’s commitment to precise creative input. As Don swiftly adjusts the flip-up design of the headset to accommodate his glasses, he quickly becomes immersed in exploring the virtual world using the new controller’s intuitive gestures, effortlessly manipulating objects within the VR environment through deliberate, precise movements.
Sony’s very first product under its new “XYN” brand won’t actually be a headset or controller, though. Sony is set to release its inaugural software solution under the XYN brand, dubbed XYN Movement Studio, a subscription-based PC utility hitting the Microsoft Store later this month. This innovative tool will enable seamless connectivity with up to 12 Mocopi movement sensors.
The Mocopi Professional Package will be available for pre-order starting late March 2025, featuring a comprehensive hardware bundle priced at $1,180. The potential impact of integrating 12-point physique motion monitoring capabilities is substantial, offering a wealth of benefits to the most active users of VRChat, as well as filmmakers and artists from diverse backgrounds. Sony claims its system is always up-to-date, enabling seamless integration of camera expertise for enhanced accuracy, while also leveraging advanced post-processing capabilities to refine captured moments.
The innovative 3D scanning system, touted as a prototype by Sony, has the potential to revolutionize the way we capture photorealistic 3D computer-generated (CG) properties. This groundbreaking technology utilizes photographs taken with mirrorless cameras, combined with proprietary algorithms, to “convert high-quality” and accurately replicate real-world objects and areas in stunning detail.
As Sony’s PlayStation VR2 users eagerly await immersive gaming and interactive experiences, the XYN branding emerges as a promising alternative option, catering to their desires. As a distinct alternative focused on enterprise content creation, XYN addresses a unique market segment.
We’ll be diving into XYN during this week’s VR Obtain on Thursday, with additional insights from Don available on UploadVR.com and our YouTube channel throughout the week.
