Prior to settling in for a three-hour playthrough of the remake at a recent Konami-led press event in London, we were treated to a new trailer. The initial trailer’s lukewarm reception had left me with doubts about the film’s potential. While I’m open to reimagining classics, I’m wary of modernization’s tendency to substitute the unique, the quirky, and the unsettling aspects of bygone eras with the bland homogeny characteristic of contemporary AAA gaming.
Upon examining it closely, some skepticism seems justified. I am convinced that the unique feature of this online game is truly exceptional and outstanding.
As James jogs briskly across the bustling streets, one can’t help but wonder if this athletic endeavour would translate as smoothly to the virtual realm of sports video games on the PS5, where multimillion-dollar franchises await. It’s a foggy day, but otherwise unremarkable. The shift to an over-the-shoulder digital camera setup, coupled with the tendency to smash home windows in search of health items and the use of white fabrics to mark interactive areas, collectively lack specificity.

The latter two mechanics also significantly elevate the game’s overall quality, potentially even more so. The sporting event has been advised to last approximately 12 hours, whereas the unusual clock system in round eight operates independently of this duration. Neely’s Bar, initially a compact and tantalizing destination marked by a cryptic map notation, transforms into a demanding expedition requiring adventurers to venture to another newly discovered city area to acquire an essential item before reassembling the pieces of a challenging puzzle. While the addition of new puzzles to the franchise’s lore may generate enthusiasm among some fans, it’s undeniable that others are growing weary of this trend.
I’m not convinced that would have a significant impact on the narrative’s tempo.
In numerous instances, Konami’s PR proved particularly helpful, allowing us to skip spending an entire hour playing through the game’s early levels before using a pre-set save point to jump forward to the residence segment. As the mystery of the Neely’s Bar puzzle still remains unexplored, it is uncertain what hidden truths lie beneath its surface, waiting to be unearthed.
I cannot adequately convey the depth of my experience until I’ve spent a prolonged period in this modern metropolis, but the implication that we shouldn’t bother trying to grasp its essence is telling enough.

The stark contrast of destroyed homes, however, abruptly dispelled any sense of blandness. They’re claustrophobic, labyrinthine, and tense. Their design cleverly rekindles the elements that initially made them enjoyable, departing from the prevailing trend in modern AAA video games. Embarking on an immersive adventure with James’ tactile map, where worn creases and hasty annotations tell the tale of countless expeditions, proves infinitely more captivating than relying on a sleek, screen-based navigation system.
With this additional component, the remake’s improvements are prominently showcased. Stunned by the exceptional audio craftsmanship in the YouTube video’s unique residence segment, following its conclusion, I was thoroughly impressed by the remarkable difference made possible through meticulous sound design work. The unique James creaks and groans with every labored footstep, yet his blows strike with a deadly silence. As he swung around, his screams of terror and disgust mingled in a haunting crescendo when he suddenly collided with a lifelike automaton. Although the fight choreography isn’t particularly stunning, Luke Roberts deserves praise for pushing for its improvement.
According to lead producer Maciej Głomb of Bloober Team, Roberts and the other voice actors played a crucial role in refining the script for the remake. All of them were professionals, he notes. To facilitate creative brainstorming, writers often developed ideas for setting the tone or advancing a specific scene or dialogue passage. As long as their advice has consistently aligned with our desired tone, we have confidently relied on their authority and skill.
The rewritten script has undergone significant revisions to enhance its comprehensibility, claims Głomb, who notes that editing techniques have evolved to enable the team to “show, not tell” emotional depth through cutting-edge technologies like facial expression capture. While many mechanics have been updated for the remake, it’s the narrative that Bloober Team is striving to maintain “as close as possible” to the original, according to artistic director Mateusz Lenart: “The characters of the original game, their unique arcs and endings, and what these characters are.”

There’ll, nevertheless, be extra endings. “One of our earliest requests from Konami, I recall, was…” The distinctive conclusions will all be contemporary, including even the lighthearted ones, with our signature spin adding a subtle layer of depth. Meanwhile, fresh game modes will present opportunities for varied results. While Bloober Team’s intentions remain unclear, Głomb did intimate that the developers might borrow “something from a completely different world” or “from a completely different game,” suggesting potential overlap with other Silent Hill titles.
I conclude my inquiry about Głomb and Lenart by inquiring whether they drew from outdoor influences while crafting the remake. Noted for drawing inspiration from iconic cinematic masterpieces, including the oeuvre of David Lynch, as well as the avant-garde works of Francis Bacon, among others. What sport is able to rival the financial impact of 2024 with its unique influence, particularly in the last two decades?
The reply is usually no. Inspired by Italian painter Nicola Samori’s thought-provoking pieces and French artist-performer Olivier de Sagazan’s innovative works, Lenart’s creative journey was influenced from the very beginning. While initially focused on reinvigorating the original inspiration behind the sport. “According to Lenart, the top priority for the entire group was revisiting those classic films.” Despite this, there’s no need to look further,” he remarks. Since the game is somewhat stuck in that era, we didn’t see the need to actively look for fashion references.
In my earlier years, I had been even more hesitant about this notion. While acknowledging that the remade version may reflect its contemporary context, it’s crucial to consider how this influence shapes its overall impact. Typically, it presents itself like any other top-tier sport, but that wasn’t necessary. Upon first encountering Pyramid Head.

As you navigate the peculiar terrain of this unique sport, you initially encounter Pyramid Head radiating an ominous crimson glow, situated behind a hastily constructed barrier in the seedy Wooden Aspect residences. Unlike within the confines of a unique sport, one already knows who Pyramid Head is.
The terror that gripped me as I first laid eyes on Pyramid Head cannot be overstated. The primal fear was ingrained in me, long before I ever experienced the thrill of the sport, an anxiety that only now, in this very moment, is revealed as a lingering unease stemming from cultural osmosis. As I lingered outside, my gaze arrested by the familiar contours of the bars, I couldn’t help but feel like Pyramid Head, scrutinized and evaluated through the very same metal grid that had once confined me. After the individual next to me coughed, I leapt from my seat in alarm. At its best, 2024’s most inspired moments rival those of 2001. And yet again, in 2001, this online game truly stood out as exceptional. It is, in its most crystallized sense, an icon. Can the remake effectively tap into what made the original iconic, making it truly exceptional? It’s unlikely that will happen regularly, but it could possibly occur frequently enough.
