Shiftall has opened pre-orders for the newly announced MeganeX superlight 8K, a sleek and lightweight, high-resolution OLED PC-based virtual reality (VR) headset that leverages SteamVR base stations for precise tracking.
Panasonic and Shiftall, an XR hardware startup it acquired last year, jointly hosted a press conference in Tokyo yesterday to unveil the MeganeX superlight 8K, scheduled for release between February and March 2025. Preorders are currently available within the United States, coming in at a steep price of $1,900.
The MeganeX Superlight 8K headset boasts a flip-up design, aiming to make an impression with its 1.35-inch micro-OLED displays offering a resolution of 3,552 x 3,840 pixels per eye and a 90 Hz refresh rate. The PC VR headset supports 10-bit color depth and also offers HDR assistance through SteamVR.
The headset weighs approximately 185 grams, excluding the headstrap, and features proprietary pancake lenses crafted by Panasonic, as well as motorized interpupillary distance (IPD) adjustment, accommodating users between 58 and 72 mm, along with focus adjustment ranging from 0 diopters to -7 diopters.
The headset features integrated twin microphones with advanced beamforming capabilities, as well as six-degree-of-freedom (6DOF) head tracking enabled through integration with SteamVR base stations (models 1.0 or 2.0 necessary for optimal performance). Add-ons to prescription lenses are likely to become an option sooner rather than later.
Although the MeganeX Superlight 8K lacks onboard audio capabilities, it does feature a versatile USB-C port capable of charging and connecting external headphones seamlessly.
Accessible solely in Japan and the US for now, Meganex’s superlight 8K headset is targeting the same PC VR enthusiasts who flocked to Bigscreen Past, which offers lower-resolution micro OLED displays (2,560 x 2,560 pixels per eye) at roughly half the price and a lighter weight of just 127g.
Like Bigscreen Past and the enigmatic MeganeX, which made its limited Japan debut in late 2023, the MeganeX superlight 8K headset taps into the SteamVR ecosystem, requiring users to provide their own controllers and base stations. Pre-orders are now available in the US for $1,900.
