This winter, Sega is set to release Virtua Fighter 5 on Steam for the first time, rekindling memories of the iconic fighting game series that originated in 1993 and has since spawned four main installments, with the latest one debuting in 2006. That’s confirmed: the newly announced Virtua Fighter, which a Sega executive hinted at earlier this month, marks yet another iteration in the series’ 18-year legacy.
While this proposal may not fully meet enthusiasts’ expectations, it does introduce several desirable innovations to the game. Sega announces that the latest model features advanced online battle capabilities, including rollback netcode assistance, alongside enhanced graphics showcasing 4K visuals and updated high-resolution textures. Additionally, the update includes various stability improvements to ensure a seamless gaming experience for its roster of 19 playable characters.
Seega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the creators of the Like A Dragon and Judgment franchises, are set to deliver a robust lineup of game modes, including ranked, arcade, coaching, and versus options, as well as 16-player tournaments and leagues for online competition enthusiasts.
The innovative model of debuted in arcades in 2006, subsequently being ported to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 within the ensuing 12-month period. In 2008, Sega expanded the franchise by introducing new characters such as Jean Kujo and reviving fan-favorite sumo wrestler Taka-Arashi, adding them to the game’s playable roster. Originally released in arcades in 2010, the game made its way to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles in 2012. Can be played within the digital arcades of various video games from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s portfolio.
Earlier this month, Sega’s Vice President of Worldwide Transmedia, Justin Scarpone, spoke with Video Games Chronicle, revealing the company is developing another Virtua Fighter game, sparking speculation about whether a long-awaited installment might be on the horizon. Sega is reportedly working on revivals of several classic franchises, including Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Shinobi, and Crazy Taxi, leaving gamers optimistic that a new Virtua Fighter installment may also be in development. Virtuosi Fashion (VF) enthusiasts will need to be patient for the next iteration, but in the meantime, they can delight in an even more impressive version of the current offering.
