The PlayStation VR2 video games are expected to be upscaled by the PS5 Professional through a forthcoming firmware update.
Like NVIDIA’s DLSS, the PS5 Pro’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) feature leverages a neural network trained on gameplay footage to upscale games, yielding significantly higher-quality results than traditional image upscaling methods.
According to Sony’s interview with CNET, the PlayStation Studios Restoration (PSSR) capability will seamlessly integrate with the entire library of classic flat-screen PlayStation games. PSSR’s immediate impact on VR video games is minimal, as it won’t be integrated at launch; instead, a forthcoming firmware update will enable the technology to work seamlessly with all VR games, though a specific release date remains unclear.
VR developers may opt to leverage the PS5 Pro’s significantly accelerated GPU, boasting a 45% performance boost, to enhance the frame rate of graphically demanding PlayStation VR2 titles from 60fps to 90fps seamlessly. While this approach can effectively mitigate the unpleasant double-imaging artifacts associated with reprojection, it may not necessarily result in a raw improvement in resolution.
Although the PlayStation 5 Pro (PSSR) supports virtual reality (VR), each game will still appear and feel superior when played on the PSSR due to upscaling and a higher resolution. And this unique blend of features could well underpin the console’s remarkable $700 price tag, providing a compelling reason for some PlayStation VR2 homeowners to splurge on it.
