The price of PlayStation VR2 is set to increase by ¥9,000 ($82) in Japan due to recent global economic developments and challenging external factors.
Sony is increasing the prices of its PS5 console, PlayStation VR2 headset, and various accessories in Japan, effective September 2, 2024. “After carefully considering the impact of recent global economic shifts and external factors affecting our business, we have made the decision,” said SIE in a Japanese PlayStation Blog post.
Japanese retailers will offer the standard PlayStation 5 at a range of ¥66,980 ($463) to ¥79,980 ($553), while the digital-only edition’s price tag is expected to increase from ¥59,980 ($415) to ¥72,980 ($504). The PlayStation VR2 headset’s price tag is set to increase from ¥74,980 ($518) to ¥89,980 ($622), with the Horizon Name of the Mountain PSVR 2 bundle jumping up to ¥94,980 ($656).
The Sense Controller Charging Station and PlayStation VR2 PC Adapter remain unscathed, likely due to the adapter’s recent release. As there’s still no indication that these price hikes will extend to other regions, it’s worth noting that Sony previously raised PS5 console prices in North America, Asia, Australia, and Europe in 2022, attributing the move to high inflation rates.
According to recent reports, Sony’s PlayStation VR2 has seen a remarkable surge in sales following a $200 price drop last month. Data from retailers suggests a staggering 2350% increase in PSVR2 headset sales, indicating a significant boost in demand for the virtual reality technology. According to reports, these additional items were made available for a limited time, marking the first instance they were offered throughout an entire year.
