Has nothing in need of a catastrophic event occurred for developer Starbreeze Studios. Despite its impressive success mirroring that of its predecessor, the multiplayer shooter has consistently faced criticism from its dwindling player base over the past year since its launch. Starbreeze has consistently fallen short of its internal benchmarks, a reality it has repeatedly acknowledged, with ongoing underperformance now prompting anticipated consequences.
The game developer recently released its quarterly financial report, revealing plans to “substantially” reduce investment in and after the game’s launch, sparking concerns about the title’s long-term prospects.
The studio notes that the initial year’s revenue came primarily from the launch of downloadable content (DLC) and the Operation Medic Bag pack, both of which contributed to a notable increase in funding throughout this period. “Within the next 12 months, we’re confident that we can continue delivering significant value to our players with significantly reduced funding requirements.”
Starbreeze’s failure to nurture its player base since Overkill 3’s launch has led to a predictable decision: reviving support for the shooter. The move raises questions about the studio’s future plans for the game and the franchise as a whole.
