The PlayStation 5 Professional is set to launch on November 7th, carrying a price tag of $700. While Sony touts over 50 games receiving day-one enhancements, only one PSVR 2 title – From Higher Than Life – has been confirmed to receive a launch-day boost thus far.
The PS5 Pro will empower PSVR2 games to operate at accelerated frame rates, likely without the need for reprojection, thereby supplementing the reduced frame rates achieved through ‘artificial frames’ to deliver an enhanced perceived refresh rate.
The PlayStation console’s newly installed GPU boasts a substantial 67% increase in compute models compared to its predecessor, along with 28% faster memory. This enhanced performance is further complemented by the introduction of Ps Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an AI-driven upscaling feature that promises superior visuals.
Although PSSR won’t be integrated into VR video games at launch, Sony’s lead PlayStation system architect Mark Cerny revealed a patch will become available to PSVR 2 game developers “at some point,” as reported in September.
While the PlayStation 5 (PS5) boasts a “Professional Enhanced” badge, designating it as the only virtual reality (VR) native to capitalize on the console’s significant processing power boost, this enhancement is inherently tied to the console’s overall performance upgrade rather than being a standalone feature.
At the time of its launch, Sony’s records listed only three PSVR2-compatible titles from Hello Games and Capcom’s —no details were provided on potential upgrades to these VR modes.
Several third-party virtual reality video game developers, including Stonebrick Studios and emerging studios VitruviusVR and A2D Software, have committed to releasing PS5 Professional upgrades for their existing games in the near future.
