The darkish math video games studio, spearheaded by former ZA/UM developers now operating independently on the detective RPG XXX Nightshift, has secured fresh funding for their ongoing project. MM Grupp, the Estonian funding firm that previously supported the development of Disco Elysium, has injected further capital into the project.
According to exclusive data received by Gamesindustry.biz, the funding falls within a seven-figure range, with neither MM Grupp nor any press outlets publicly disclosing a specific figure. Despite this, an announcement has been issued by Kaur Kender, co-founder of Darkish Math, following the recent funding.
We’re delighted to partner with a seasoned investor who not only comprehends but also passionately supports art, as well as the gaming industry specifically; MM Grupp’s endorsement will bring forth stability and a long-term vision. Together, we’ve achieved something remarkable in the past, and we’re confident that we’ll replicate that success again.
The ripple effect from the ZA/UM controversy has resulted in a significant network of indie developers working on distinctively captivating projects, including Londague, Summer Time Eternal, and Dark Maths. The fervent fan base of Disco Elysium has spawned a conflict between spiritual heirs to the original creators’ vision? The reality is that teams formed by former ZA/UM staff members have leveraged their unique expertise, having collaborated with each other in unconventional ways over the past year or so, as they work on their individual creative projects – all of which are captivating to both long-time ZA/UM fans and newcomers alike.
The Darkish Math project emerged in October, spawned by a collective of 20 individuals who self-identified as a “breakaway group” from its original development team. Among the notable founders of ZA/UM is Kaur Kender, a government producer on Disco Elysium who also served as an early investor for the studio.
In the captivating world of Disco Elysium, Kael is a character in his own right, full of intriguing complexity and depth. In 2023, he initiated a contentious intellectual property dispute with ZA/UM regarding the rights to Disco Elysium, ultimately resulting in a court-ordered payment of legal fees to the game’s developer. With their momentum building, the team at Darkish Math appears fully invested in XXX Nightshift, leveraging a sizeable financial cushion to drive progress.
