The Netflix app on Oculus Quest is currently not accessible from the store and no longer functions properly.
The VR application boasted a cozy cabin atmosphere, with John Carmack, a renowned developer, contributing to its creation in 2015 specifically for the Samsung Gear VR platform. Ported to Oculus Go and later reimagined as the unique Oculus Quest, yet it had languished without updates for some time. Because of its early development, the system was limited to a maximum resolution of 480p and lacked functionality for facilitating downloads or passthrough capabilities.
The Quest’s web browser has just been updated to support Netflix, marking the formal replacement of its previous VR app, exactly one month after deprecation.
You can still open the VR app if it’s installed, but attempting to stream content will trigger a playback error.
Netflix allows streaming up to 1080p within the native browser, supports seamless integration with pass-through or digital home settings, and fosters efficient multitasking capabilities.
Unfortunately, without sideloading the Android app, Quest lacks a seamless solution for accessing content offline, making it inconvenient for users requiring data-free viewing on flights, during physical activity, or in areas with slow internet connections. Netflix is accessible directly within Apple’s VR headset, clarifying that while other platforms like Disney+ and Prime Video are available through app downloads.
