Starting this spring, Motorola cellphone users will be able to seamlessly connect and access their devices in virtual reality (VR) on Meta’s Horizon platform, utilizing its innovative Horizon OS.
Mark Zuckerberg unveiled Motorola’s Good Join app during his visit to Lenovo Tech World 2024, and it’s set to debut on Horizon OS as a 2D application “in the near future”.
According to Zuckerberg, this technology enables users to seamlessly collaborate with any app on their smartphone and a larger digital display, provided they are using a Motorola device.
Motorola holds approximately 5% of the global smartphone market share and around 10% within the United States. It is unlikely that this data will have a significant impact on most people. While users may find virtual reality experiences more engaging, maintaining connections with others remains essential even in these immersive environments?
iPhone owners with VisionOS 2 can now experience a futuristic feature: viewing their phone in virtual reality using Apple’s Vision Pro app, but unfortunately, this capability is limited to visual-only immersion, lacking the ability to control their digital surroundings.
Will Motorola’s solution help access DRM-protected content like Netflix and Disney+ for offline viewing, or will it only apply to non-DRM files? While you may already access most smartphones on Horizon OS via a USB-C cable through Meta Quest’s HDMI Link feature, note that this connection lacks support for the HDCP digital rights management (DRM) system.
Meta Horizon OS Will Run On Headsets From ASUS & Lenovo
Meta is rebranding its Quest software platform as Meta Horizon OS and expanding access to third-party headset manufacturers, including ASUS and Lenovo.
Mark Zuckerberg reiterated that Lenovo, the parent company of Motorola, is actively working on several Horizon OS headsets of its own, following their initial announcement in April.
While a specific release date hasn’t been announced for the primary Lenovo Horizon OS headset, it’s unlikely to arrive before 2025, as there was no preview or hint at Lenovo Tech World 2024, suggesting that a launch in the near future is improbable.
