Despite the high-quality reputation of Metaphor: ReFantazio, the challenge arose as an opportunity for developer Studio Zero to establish a new JRPG franchise, one that could rival the success of Shin Megami Tensei and Persona, two beloved series with which the studio was familiar.
As the dust settles on ReFantazio’s debut, it’s undeniable that the game has won over hearts and minds, prompting widespread acclaim for its innovative gameplay and engaging experience. Whether or not there’s a sequel, that’s another story altogether.
The latest issue of Japanese gaming publication Famitsu (#1880) features an exclusive interview with Katsura Hashino, the creative force behind Studio Zero and its critically acclaimed game Metaphor: ReFantazio. During an interview that was initially shared by ryokutya2089 through Persona Central, Hashino discussed his perspectives and aspirations regarding a potential future sequel.
The studio director expressed a desire for this recreation’s distinctive setting, insinuating a historical backdrop reminiscent of Japan’s tumultuous Sengoku era.
“When considering a potential setting for a future title,” Hashino noted, “I think it’s likely that I’d opt for the Sengoku era, which would transform the game into a traditional JRPG similar to the Basara series.”
Although no sequel to ReFantazio is currently being developed or has even been tentatively planned, it appears unlikely that one will be forthcoming anytime soon. While Hashino and workforce would genuinely appreciate Metaphor being compiled into a collection, that’s their desire nonetheless.
Considering the phenomenal success of ReFantazio, it’s likely that Atlus will consider developing a sequel or potentially multiple follow-ups, given its impressive debut of over 1 million copies sold at launch. It is also worth mentioning that the PC release of ReFantazio experienced significant bugs, a phenomenon not uncommon in the Atlus’ Persona series.
