In the isolated vastness of space, your cries for help are forever silenced. In virtual reality, the whispered frustrations and muttered curses that accompany every failed attempt to draw a weapon are broadcast for all to hear, a stark reminder that even in this simulated world, embarrassment knows no bounds. Memoriam’s tactile design allows for a deeply immersive experience, demanding hands-on engagement with every mechanical aspect.
With its exceptional immersive qualities, the game’s reliance on handbook weapon reloading also increases your susceptibility to botching a crucial reload as hordes of undead creatures close in, heightening the tension and sense of urgency. A tense and atmospheric experience unfolds as players navigate the eerie confines of a deserted spaceship in Memoreum, evoking echoes of critically acclaimed titles such as Lifeless Area and Alien: Isolation. In today’s chaotic world, most individuals are struggling to find their place, often allowing themselves to be consumed by darkness. Your unique role requires you to act as a master puzzle solver, painstakingly reassembling fragmented lives and identifying the root causes of their downfall. Fortunately, you now possess a comprehensive array of weapons and tools at your disposal.
By combining action-packed motion gameplay with spine-tingling survival horror elements, alongside brain-teasing puzzles and immersive exploration, the demo keeps players on their toes, ensuring no moment feels repetitive or dull. As the seconds tick by, you switch seamlessly between tasks – adjusting a valve or inputting a code on your keypad one moment, and then retreating quickly while confronting the unsettling sight of a creature that was once human in the next. The preview hour whizzed by in a thrill-packed, edge-of-your-seat experience that left me breathless.
Memorium achieves a harmonious balance between user engagement and challenge. When donning a VR headset, you’d expect an authentic experience that simulates real-life interactions – including retrieving instruments from your backpack. To achieve this, you physically reach across your shoulder, extract the pack, and grasp the desired instrument, re-creating the tactile sensation of handling actual gear. With an arsenal at your disposal, your trusty pistol, equipped with infinite ammunition, rests comfortably on your hip, while your primary firearm, equally reliable, sits securely on the opposite shoulder. The magazines are stored in a designated pouch on my chest for easy access and organization.
With intuitive controls and precise responsiveness, accidental grabs or missteps are eliminated, leaving no room for error – what happens next is solely your responsibility. The game truly comes alive where these errors occur, and Memoreum stands out for its exceptionally tactile controls. To reload the submachine gun, first depress the journal eject button and remove the spent magazine. Then, draw a fresh magazine from your pouch, align its base with the receiver’s magazine well at the correct angle, and insert it smoothly. Finally, grasp the barrel and retract the cocking handle to chamber the new cartridge. When you’re standing still in a well-lit storage room, the task seems manageable. However, if you’re navigating a dimly lit, narrow corridor with unseen threats looming close, the challenge becomes significantly more daunting.
The double-barreled shotgun is equally intimidating in its presence. To ensure proper functioning of your firearm, it is crucial to fully retract the barrels to facilitate shell ejection, followed by the timely insertion of fresh rounds prior to subsequent firing. While it delivers a powerful blow, the slow reload process renders this weapon a risky choice to wield. Mastering the art of reloading these weapons, you revel in the thrill of combat, channeling your inner space marine as you effortlessly take down every adversary that dares to enter your crosshairs.
While Memoreum’s narrative and environment may evoke familiar sci-fi survival horror tropes, a soothing radio voice provides a welcome respite, offering guidance and reassurance as you navigate its eerie landscape. As the preview began at the upper echelons of the sport, numerous vessels were packed with an apparent biological growth, potentially responsible for transforming the population. Despite its intended purpose as a colony ship, the vessel instead found itself overrun by an uninvited abundance of life.
Memoreum will debut on the Meta Quest platform and Steam in 2025.
