As the Magic: The Gathering collaboration trend shows no signs of slowing down, the next stop is undoubtedly Ultimate Fantasy, which promises to deliver some exceptional trading cards.
With the Magic: The Gathering franchise’s practice factor momentarily overshadowing the actual game, Wizards of the Coast has finally confirmed the long-awaited Ultimate Fantasy collaboration, bringing together two beloved series in a move that feels both overdue and inevitable given their shared fantasy roots. Not surprisingly, one of the first cards revealed from the set features Sephiroth descending from the heavens, sword in hand, poised to strike at a key figure just out of frame – a gruesome yet captivating image that yields striking card art.
While prominent characters like Cloud are missing, there’s no denying that their persona would be an ideal fit for a card, so it’s reasonable to speculate that such a character will arrive at some point with great fanfare. What we have is an extraordinary collection of Moggles, featuring a memorable moment shared by Kefka from Final Fantasy VI, Tidus, and Yuna locking lips in a tender display (a testament to the enduring appeal of Tidus x Yuna fans), alongside Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII and Emet Selch from Final Fantasy XIV. “‘This set brings together a diverse range of artwork,’ says head designer Mark Rosewater. ‘From Magic artists across the franchise, we’ve curated a selection that includes iconic illustrations from renowned Final Fantasy artists, as well as brand-new, breathtaking pieces created exclusively for this release.'”
The accompanying announcement brought significant news akin to all Universes Past launches, namely: Units primarily driven by partnerships with iconic franchises such as Final Fantasy, alongside existing collaborations like Hatsune Miku and Stranger Things, are now authorized across all formats. This means that your newly acquired Sephiroth card won’t just gather dust in your binder; you can access it whenever you desire.
The highly anticipated Ultimate Fantasy x Magic: The Gathering collaboration is currently slated for release on June 13, 2025, giving fans ample time to prepare before the next Universes Past set, Spider-Man, takes center stage in its subsequent offering.
