Despite a relatively calm final week for major gaming releases, one notable exception emerged, and as expected, it dominated sales charts globally. According to Famitsu’s latest regional charts, which track hardware and physical game sales in Japan, Nintendo’s newly released remastered title has taken the top spot in Japan alongside the UK.
The sport provided more than 88,000 physical copies, making it the second-lowest debut for a game in Japan, surpassing even its own 2017 3DS remake, which sold under 30,000 copies at launch. Despite being an unambitious remaster at the end of a console’s lifespan, this is still a solid start.
The recent HD remaster’s release has sparked renewed interest in the original game, causing a surge in sales that has propelled it back into the top 10, currently sitting at number 7. With a vast selection of more than 4,000 items available.
The PlayStation hardware sales saw a predictable surge, becoming the top-selling console in Japan with an impressive 46,000 units moved. The PlayStation 5 took second place, trailing by a significant margin with more than 27,000 items available throughout the week.
