Rumors have swirled through the industry about Sony’s potential acquisition of Kadokawa Company, the parent entity behind renowned game developer FromSoftware. Takeshi Natsuno, CEO of Kadokawa, has confirmed the news with a press release, stating that the company has received a “preliminary letter of intent” from Sony to acquire its shares.
Although no agreement has been reached for now, he stressed that any details emerging from these talks are likely to be shared at a time and in a way that is both timely and relevant. Notably, Japanese financial newspaper Nikkei reported that both parties were still in the preliminary stages of their negotiations.
While time will ultimately reveal how these matters unfold, Sony’s existing stake in Kadokawa does provide a foundation for potential involvement. With a 1.93% stake from their capital alliance formed in February 2021, the company further acquired 14.09% of newly issued shares from FromSoftware in August 2022. Although Sony has remained silent on the potential acquisition of Kadokawa, reports suggest that it was considering merging or acquiring FromSoftware as far back as April 2022. Stay informed for further details and developments in the interim.
