World of Warcraft: The Warfare Within lies just beneath the surface. It’s a formidably ambitious undertaking, immersing players in previously unexplored realms and civilizations beneath the earth’s surface. In response to Affiliate Design Director Maria Hamilton and Lead Prop Artist Jordan Powers, the newly designed system builds upon a single foundational zone.
According to Hamilton, “Our team’s understanding of the phenomenon was crystallized during our expedition to Zaralek Caverns.” As we worked tirelessly to expand Zaralek Cavern, our goal was to create a sense of freedom and openness within its vast expanse – so much so that even beneath the earth’s surface, we craved those moments where space seemed limitless and unrestricted. It appears that Hollowfall logically points towards us undertaking that action. As you emerge from the darkness of the Ringing Deeps, a breathtaking sight awaits – a vast, colossal cavern stretches out before you.
Hamilton continued, “We’ve been organizing our underground expedition for quite some time now.” To achieve the level of complexity and scale we desired, we required significant technological upgrades to ensure a successful outcome. Therefore Zaralek Caverns! Our initial attempt at creating a stackable system featured a smooth, uninterrupted surface between each level. “It’s something that was previously impossible for us to achieve.”
While exploring the Zaralek Caverns, we seized the opportunity to confront certain challenges, uncover captivating stories within those walls, and gain insight into the enormity of the area we had yet to discover. To create a truly immersive experience in our home, we had to determine the ideal ceiling height and develop techniques to make skyriding a thrilling sensation within its walls. Having the opportunity to test these things out at that point was invaluable, because otherwise we would’ve been attempting them for the first time right now, which wouldn’t have been as effective.
The Zaralek Caverns, a mid-expansion zone introduced in Dragonflight, initially felt like a relic from the past – a densely packed area featuring numerous daily quests, common enemies, and reputations that demanded grinding. While attempting again, you genuinely acquire the feeling that it’s an earnest effort to create colossal, pulse-pounding subterranean realms. Blizzard’s inaugural foray into unearthing the subterranean depths of the planet, Zaralek, presents a prosperous new world beneath our feet, seamlessly blending familiar elements with unknown treasures.
In responding to Powers, this pivotal juncture played a crucial role in crafting the new zones, alongside The Ringing Deeps. To evoke a sense of comfort among gamers, we aimed to recreate familiar settings by incorporating elements like cenotes, which are naturally lit by radiant “god rays” streaming through openings in the ceiling, casting a warm glow on the vibrant mineral water. To fully immerse yourself in this otherworldly setting, you must first establish the fact that you’re standing deep within a cavernous space, still firmly grounded beneath the earth, and only then can you begin to conjure up the fantastical atmosphere.
As we delve deeper, this sense of familiarity steadily fades away, replaced by an eerie sensation that culminates in the unsettling atmosphere of HollowFall. Notably, the latest World of Warcraft expansion introduces its largest zone ever, boasting an unprecedented vertical scope while incorporating modern ideas and innovations.
Hamilton remarks, “We sought to convey the impression of infinite vastness.” The discovery of a vast underground aquifer beneath our feet has revolutionized our understanding of the planet’s hydrological systems, revealing a previously unknown realm that holds immense implications for our future. The Expanse’s sprawling narrative continues unabated? Emerging from the depths, our curiosity compelled us to explore further, hoping to uncover the secrets of this unexpected location, far removed from conventional expectations.

You burst into the house without warning. I noticed that many people were excited to see it at Blizzcon and when others first got to play it.
