Intel struggles to pinpoint CPU issues, sparking a gaming developer’s scathing rebuke of ongoing game crashes.
Matthew Cassells, co-founder of Alderan Games, shared a post titled “Intel is promoting faulty 13-14th gen CPUs.” As a result, he’s considering swapping out all its game servers from Intel to AMD hardware and urging others hosting game servers to do the same.
Crashes on Intel CPUs have plagued avid gamers for several months, disproportionately impacting video games built on the Unreal engine framework. Avid gamers are encountering misleading error messages claiming they’re running out of video driver memory, despite possessing sufficient resources.
Alderon Games, an independent developer, has created Path of Titans, a massively multiplayer online (MMO) survival game where players can take on the roles of dinosaurs; however, it appears that the game has fallen victim to significant Intel stability issues. According to Caselli’s guidelines, the studio’s crash reporting tools register “hundreds of crashes” occurring on 13th and 14th Generation Intel CPUs among avid gamers engaged in playing the game.
However, Intel’s latest CPUs have reportedly caused significant issues for Alderan Games on their end. On a recent post to their weblog, Cassells lamented that builders working with these CPUs often encounter frequent instability while constructing and playing the game, which can also lead to SSD and memory corruption. Meanwhile, the game’s official dedicated servers are reportedly experiencing recurring crashes, ultimately bringing entire servers offline.
Cassells asserts that Alderon’s experience with Intel chips reveals they initially function well, only to “deteriorate over time.” Cassells’ scathing assessment of the studio’s handling of Intel CPUs contends that “the failure rate we’ve observed from our own testing is almost 100%, suggesting it’s merely a matter of time before affected CPUs fail.”
According to Cassells, Alderon is updating its {hardware} on sport servers to employ AMD CPUs instead of Intel chips, citing a significant performance improvement. The company claims that the new AMD processors experience a drastic reduction in crashes – reportedly 100 times fewer than those found in faulty Intel CPUs. Additionally, Alderon advises anyone hosting Path of Titans servers or selling game servers to avoid purchasing or using 13th and 14th gen Intel CPUs, citing their perceived faults.
