Fallout co-creator Tim Cain has hinted at the possibility of revisiting the franchise, should he be approached to do so. The developer’s curiosity in every Fallout project hinges on a single crucial consideration: what innovative elements does it bring?
If you’re not aware, Tim Cain, a veteran of the video game industry, has a YouTube channel where he regularly shares stories of growth and lessons learned from his extensive career – including recently revealing his involvement in the events that led to the cancellation of Van Buren, the original Fallout 3 project. Additionally, he regularly engages with his followers by responding to their queries, a practice that he was currently following through with.
On his YouTube channel, Cain posted a video titled “Would I Work On Fallout Again?” where he addressed the topic directly, highlighting its current popularity as his channel’s most frequently asked question. While it’s unclear what specific pitch was made, the developer’s willingness to consider the proposal hinges on whether it offers a unique opportunity that aligns with his professional trajectory, allowing him to explore new avenues or achieve unfulfilled goals.
Having previously outlined in the video, the key factor driving his curiosity in various projects has consistently been the innovative approaches taken to tackle contemporary challenges since he first had a significant say in those initiatives – so much so that he wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about working on Fallout 2 as it was simply a straightforward sequel.
The developer’s first question is often, “What’s new about it?” He says that unless the response is straightforward, he’s unlikely to be interested.
Cain clarified, “You’re inquiring about a personal matter with a private response,” he said, “which boils down to: would this even be something I’d consider doing because it’s vastly different?” On the first point, he elaborated that while he wouldn’t settle for paltry compensation for his labor, money isn’t what initially motivates him to take on a project.
“I’ve had numerous approaches over the past couple of years, during the pandemic, from individuals offering to fund a remake through their own pockets. However, none of these proposals brought anything new to the table for me,” he said, “They’d try to persuade me by saying ‘Don’t you want to create a new IP?’ or ‘Don’t you want to be a director again?’ and I didn’t know how to respond except to say ‘I’ve been there, I’ve done that, nothing you’re coming to me with is new.'”
Fallout Nuevo Mexico, a DLC-sized mod set in the world of New Vegas, has officially been confirmed as “in development” after a period of silence, sparking renewed excitement among fans of the franchise.
