A highly acclaimed science fiction series has reached its conclusion without a subsequent season, leaving fans like myself somewhat disappointed.
In its final 12 months, HBO premiered a unique and intriguing animated science fiction series titled Scavengers Reign. I had not seen such bizarre, charming, and top-of-the-line animated exhibits focused on adults in a long time. In my previous year-end commentary, I optimistically predicted that adult animation had a bright future ahead, pending one key condition being met. However, the shift towards streaming giants like Netflix has since injected an air of uncertainty into the industry’s prospects. Co-creator Joe Bennett has revealed on his private Instagram that, sadly, “Scavengers Reign” will not be receiving a second-season renewal, as of now.
Bennett elaborated, “I felt it essential to communicate promptly, as I genuinely appreciate our devoted fan base; their unwavering support has been truly remarkable, and I didn’t want to leave anyone in suspense.” Throughout our journey, we’ve had to fight tirelessly at every turn to bring this project to fruition, starting anew in 2016 with the Scavengers’ brief film and culminating in the release of the first season last year.
The Instagram post above offers a tantalizing glimpse into a potential Season 2, courtesy of an in-house production by Green Avenue Pictures, as explained by Bennett. “This isn’t the top. There’s potential for an additional narrative arc; given the opportunity, we could create another season. Internally at Green Avenue, we developed a preview of what would unfold in the subsequent installment. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who took the time to watch and support this presentation.
I’m deeply disappointed by the news, and sincerely hope that someone, somewhere will consider reviving the series for at least one more season, as there genuinely hasn’t been a comparable piece of science fiction on offer in quite some time.
