Although the Horizon Zero Dawn Netflix series might have been scrapped, Sony is reportedly working on a film adaptation of the popular PlayStation game franchise.
The proliferation of movie and TV adaptations from video games is indeed the primary driving force behind their current popularity. It came as little surprise when Sony decided to bring Horizon Zero Dawn to the small screen in collaboration with Netflix. In July of last year, the company received canned, a sudden transfer that surprisingly felt a bit jarring; however, Sony quickly got to work on alternative strategies. During its CES 2025 keynote, the company revealed that a movie adaptation of the franchise is in the works with Columbia Pictures. Although Columbia Pictures is well-known for its diverse film output, it has made a notable impact in the realm of video game adaptations, with its production of the Uncharted film being a prime example.
At CES, Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, unveiled plans to adapt the critically acclaimed game Horizon Zero Dawn into a feature film in collaboration with Columbia Pictures. In a distant, thriving future world teeming with gargantuan machines, Aloy’s compelling origin story makes its debut on the big screen for the first time. With only this brief teaser to go by, fans can expect a wait of several years before the release window is revealed, leaving anticipation to build.
It’s surprising if Sony is being explicit about what will receive large display treatment and what heads to the small screen, as God of War remains supposedly getting a TV adaptation, despite reportedly moving towards “a special creative direction” by October last year; the show has been in development for several years now, so we’ll be ready soon enough.
