To commemorate its twentieth anniversary, Valve recently released a documentary that chronicles the evolution of its iconic first-person shooter. Throughout the documentary, the corporation also sheds light on a long-awaited challenge that has never seen the light of day – that is to say, indeed being.
In the documentary, Valve has unveiled previously unreleased and unseen footage from the scrapped project, offering a rare glimpse into its abandoned development. This newly introduced enemy is a gelatinous, blob-like creature with the ability to transform and split into smaller entities. The additional feature was demonstrated as a brand-new weapon, dubbed the Ice Gun, which delivered exactly as its name suggested, effectively freezing any target in its path with precision and reliability.
In the documentary, Valve team members disclose that they had been working on multiple versions of the game before development was put on hold to allow the event team to contribute to its completion. By the time the project was completed, however, it became clear that it was too late to go back and rework certain aspects of the game, as determined by Valve’s management team, including Gabe Newell, who ultimately decided that the effort required would not have been justified given the stage of development.
