We conclude our journey through the world of PlayStation with a final thought: thank you. Thank you for joining us on this State of Play; we hope you enjoyed the games and announcements as much as we did. We’ll see you in the next one!
During its recent September 24 broadcast, PlayStation revealed Ghost of Yotei, a sequel to Sucker Punch’s critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima.
The game is slated to launch in 2025 and has unveiled its first-ever cinematic trailer featuring a female Ronin protagonist for the series’ milestone history. For reasons unclear to many, Jin Sakai appears to possess an affinity for wolves, much like someone else might have a penchant for foxes.
The trailer’s blurb affords some information on the plot, studying as follows: “In 1603, a brand new Ghost named Atsu units out on a journey within the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei, an space stuffed with sprawling grasslands, snowy tundras, and surprising risks. Ghost of Yōtei involves PS5 in 2025.”
“After settling on a brand-new Ghost game,” wrote Andrew Goldfarb, communications supervisor for Sucker Punch, in the PS blog announcing the news, “we wanted to maintain the core pillars established in Ghost of Tsushima: playing as a wandering warrior in feudal Japan, providing freedom to explore at your own pace, and showcasing the beauty of the world.”

To further drive growth, we also recognized the need to pioneer new approaches. We set aside Jin Sakai’s narrative and the island of Tsushima to reimagine the concept of the Ghost in a more modern yet familiar context. We at Sucker Punch are fascinated by origin stories, and the prospect of introducing a fresh hero donning a Ghost mask and unearthing a novel legend presented an exciting challenge for us to unravel. This led us to Ghost of Yōtei: a brand new protagonist, a brand new story to unfold, and a brand new area of Japan to discover.”
The game developer Goldfarb revealed that Sucker Punch’s latest title is their inaugural production built specifically for the PlayStation 5 console. Now, with our expansive sightlines, you can gaze out into the atmosphere, taking in a vast expanse of twinkling stars, shimmering auroras, and breathtaking vistas. The wind rustles through grass and vegetation, creating an uncannily realistic motion. Moreover, this new setting presents us with the opportunity to introduce innovative mechanics, enrich our gameplay, and even unveil fresh weapon designs.
Notably, Mount Yōtei is in actual world Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan recognized for its, effectively, snow. You might just find yourself carving up the slopes on a snowy day, but for now, it’s hard to predict with certainty. Expect additional details from Sucker Punch regarding Ghost of Yotei to emerge in the coming months.
