Hugo Swart, earlier head of Qualcomm’s XR division, introduced he’s joined Google the place he’ll lead the corporate’s XR Ecosystem Technique and Know-how efforts.
Swart shared the information in a LinkedIn replace, noting the transfer occurred just a few months in the past:
Completely satisfied to share that I joined Google couple months in the past and am answerable for XR Ecosystem Technique and Know-how. Tremendous excited to proceed the XR journey and dealing with you all – nice issues forward! Thanks Shahram Izadi for the chance! Trying ahead to AWE this week!!
As Normal Supervisor and Vice President of XR at Qualcomm, Swart was a driving drive behind the corporate’s Snapdragon XR collection of chipsets, which at the moment energy nearly all of standalone headsets available on the market, together with all of Meta’s Quest headsets to this point.
Following Swart’s departure from Qualcomm in February, Alex Katouzian, Group GM of the Cell, XR, and Compute Enterprise Unit is at the moment overseeing XR at Qualcomm.
Swart is becoming a member of Google at a pivotal second in XR, as the corporate not too long ago introduced a strategic know-how partnership with Magic Leap, which is seen as an effort to maintain up with Meta, Apple, and others in a race to regulate the burgeoning AR headset market.
This follows a notable setback final 12 months when Google reportedly shelved its Venture Iris AR glasses following mass restructuring inside the firm, which included layoffs, reshuffles, and the departure of Clay Bavor, Google’s then-head of AR and VR.
In the meantime, Google is creating a brand new Android-based platform for Samsung’s upcoming XR headset introduced again in February 2023, which is ready to be powered by Qualcomm silicon. Google can also be rumored to be creating a “Micro XR” platform for XR glasses, which is claimed to make use of a prototyping platform internally often known as “Betty.”
