Despite announcing additional 220 layoffs, Bungie maintains its content roadmap remains unaffected, yet a recent report by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reveals otherwise?
According to anonymous sources within Bungie, including both current and former employees, Jason Schreier reports that the company is revising its content roadmap, shifting from annual expansions to more frequent, smaller-scale updates. The identical claim was previously verified by renowned journalist Jeff Grubb.
As gross sales of expansions dwindle year-over-year, allegedly offering less at launch than in the previous 12 months’s expansion, and with production costs skyrocketing as they are, the studio has reportedly decided to discontinue releasing annual expansions, instead opting to launch smaller, more frequent updates under new director Tyson Green.
The aim is said to be retaining current players while attracting newcomers through regular, bite-sized content updates similar in scope to those rolled out earlier this year. To generate buzz around their latest updates, Bungie plans to release these new content additions without a fee, aiming to draw in both veteran gamers and newcomers alike, with future narrative expansions potentially introducing fresh characters and locations unseen in the franchise’s vast universe?
As for what lies ahead, much will be uncertain past a certain point. Reportedly, Halo wasn’t in development (and never was), while it’s claimed that Bungie also cancelled a third-person spin-off codenamed “Phoenix” to instead focus on the development of Destiny.
