The team behind the Fallout: Vault 13 mod, which aimed to recreate the original Fallout game within Fallout 4, has announced its decision to “drop” development.
As spring and summer arrive this year, fans of the Fallout series have even more to look forward to, including the highly anticipated Fallout TV series, a forthcoming Fallout 76 expansion, and the intriguing Fallout: London. Meanwhile, the creators behind Vault 13’s legendary mission have released a demo that has garnered largely positive reviews from gamers.
Notwithstanding the relatively short interval since the August demo’s release, the decision has been made to formally discontinue development of Fallout: Vault 13. After careful consideration and thorough deliberation, we selected this course of action, according to a statement posted to the modding mission’s Discord server and later shared on Twitter by founder and co-lead Culwino.
We acknowledge that this decision wasn’t straightforward, but we believe it’s a necessary step in our development. While this news may arrive unexpectedly, we regret that it may cause disappointment and sincerely apologize for the impact it will have. We are thrilled with our accomplishments so far. The successful demo launch was a testament to the unwavering dedication and passion of the entire team and community, with every effort culminating in a momentous achievement.
The server’s FAQ section now includes a statement from Culwino attributing the suspension to “a complex interplay of factors, including burnout, difficulties in recruiting and retaining staff with specialized knowledge, as well as personal lifestyle changes affecting core team members.” Without any external pressure or opposition from Bethesda, a courageous initiative unfolded, driven by dedicated individuals working with limited resources. The decision was taken to prioritize the welfare and well-being of mission personnel.
As they reiterated their stance, they emphasized: “While our momentum may be waning, it’s crucial that every accomplishment we’ve made gets the recognition it deserves.”
In the forthcoming weeks, we will unveil a comprehensive reconstruction of Fallout: Vault 13, including all previously unfinished content. This inaugural event will provide the community with an immersive experience of the mission’s current state, serving as a foundation for anyone interested in building upon or extending it in the future. The new content will be added to Nexus Mods for users to access and download. Here is the rewritten text:
“This ensures that the neighbourhood has access to all the work we’ve accomplished so far, safeguarding it for future modders and enthusiasts to build upon.”
Staff plans to release both, with Culwino stating that “a retrospective looking back at every aspect of our achievements in Fallout: Vault 13, celebrating the highs, realizing lessons learned, and the enthusiasm that fueled this endeavour” is something they aim to put out “in due course”.
While the news may not be entirely positive at present, it’s clear that the Vault 13 team has still managed to accomplish a great deal so far. While past experiences with innovative projects, such as bold reboots like Fallout: Nuevo Mexico, may not always yield immediate and significant results, it’s essential to remember that progress is often incremental and can take time to materialize.
On October 23, don’t miss Bethesda’s inaugural Fallout Day broadcast, where you’ll get exclusive developer insights into the latest developments for Fallout 76, alongside a community-driven parade. The Fallout: London mod gained a significant update last week.
