A revolutionary new manga-studying app is set to hit the city’s digital landscape, courtesy of none other than the renowned anime authority, Crunchyroll.
At the Sony press conference during CES 2025, amidst a plethora of announcements and reveals, Crunchyroll made a notable declaration: the launch of a pioneering mobile application, specifically designed for readers to explore the world of manga. The Crunchyroll app will debut as a premium add-on by the end of 2025, offering users an immersive experience that blends anime and manga content seamlessly. Initially available in English for US and Canadian markets, the platform aims to expand its linguistic capabilities in the future, but no specific timeline has been revealed regarding global rollouts.
Without providing a clear indication of what skills or knowledge can be gained from this experience? Viz Media, a prominent manga publisher, offers its own mobile application featuring a wide range of titles, including fan favorites such as Inuyasha and Uzumaki. Additionally, the Shonen Jump app provides access to nearly every issue of Weekly Shonen Jump, featuring popular series like Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen. Crunchyroll has already paired up with smaller publishers for certain titles, but many of the most popular ones are currently tied up with larger companies. The concerns about Crunchyroll’s stability and reliability also warrant attention.
During its initial launch, the platform offered a manga service until last month, albeit one that garnered little enthusiasm and didn’t boast an extensive library of content. Outside of this issue, however, customers and subscribers continue to express frustration with the existing anime app due to its poor usability and limited options, leaving little reason to expect more from a new app. It’s no surprise that Crunchyroll wants to expand into manga, but we’ll have to wait and see if their app can deliver.
