Canon has unveiled a new affordable lens option specifically catering to the needs of social media influencers and videographers, ideal for producing high-quality virtual reality (VR) and three-dimensional (3D) content.
Canon has launched the RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 STM Twin Fisheye lens in June, enabling their camera lineup to capture immersive spatial video and images; this innovative optic is priced at $1,099.00.
Canon is expanding its range of twin lens optics by introducing a more affordable VR lens system with the launch of the RF-S 7.8mm F4 STM Dual lens, available for purchase in November at $449.99.
The title implies that the lens features a 7.8mm focal length and a 60-degree field of view.
The newly launched Twin Fisheye lens is compatible with Canon’s latest cameras featuring RF mounts, including the EOS R, R5, R6, RP, and R7 series.
While the camera’s 72-degree field-of-view may be narrower than the 144 degrees offered by its more powerful counterpart, it is also significantly less expensive.
Canon previewed its new lens at Apple’s 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), aiming to meet growing demand for accessible spatial video production capabilities.
Notably, the new RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL lens boasts seamless functionality akin to a standard 2D RF lens, ensuring hassle-free setup for newcomers and empowering anyone with its latest RF mount cameras to craft immersive content for headsets like Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest 3?
Based on Hiroto Kato, Canon’s vp of Imaging Merchandise & Options, the RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL lens is “an thrilling step” in making 3D content material creation accessible.
“Canon’s introduction of the RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL lens marks not only a new camera release but also a significant step forward in empowering creators to express themselves through emerging technologies like virtual reality, spatial, and three-dimensional innovations,” notes Kato. This innovative lens enables consumers to effortlessly access and engage with cutting-edge, immersive content, seamlessly connecting traditional storytelling with the latest advancements in virtual reality and spatial imaging. “It’s a groundbreaking leap forward in making premium-quality 3D content more accessible to everyone.”
