To commemorate its 13th year in operation, Younger Horses has made a surprise move by releasing a PC VR beta version of Bugsnax, accompanied by a price cut for the game.
Younger Horses’ latest innovation, born from 13 years of crafting unconventional game titles, has finally taken its first steps into virtual reality (VR). Developed by the same team responsible for the Octodad series, Bugsnax embarks you on a thrilling adventure, capturing and cataloging a diverse array of bug species that cleverly masquerade as everyday edibles, while delving into their unique preferences and inclinations, and meticulously expanding your comprehensive journal of discovered species.
“We’ve invested significant effort into this project, which has proven challenging due to Bugsnax’s unique, custom-built engine.” All aspects of porting and minute details must be started anew from the beginning. However, we have finally reached the milestone where it warrants a public unveiling.
After thoroughly enjoying the game on Xbox, I’ve decided to bring home the PC version, coupled with the opportunity to experience the immersive VR mod of Bugsnax while it’s currently on offer. The development team has invested significant effort in successfully porting the sport to virtual reality, seamlessly recreating an authentic experience with only minor exceptions being the intuitive button presses that enhance the overall immersion.
When viewed through the Quest 3 via Steam Link, the title’s visual appeal is truly spectacular. The vivid hues of Bugsnax’s unconventional realm truly shine; during my experience with the VR beta, I encountered no issues regarding rendering or performance. When switching between areas in the sport, a peculiar blue SteamVR home dashboard materializes, rather than a traditional loading screen – a quirk that’s more fascinating than frustrating.
Many mechanical aspects are reduced to simple and unengaging button prompts. While VR precision may be necessary for specific actions like ketchup-slinging or trap-setting, much of the gameplay actually requires swift button-mashing. While appreciating the significant effort invested in developing a VR model of the game, I still have plenty of praise for its port, but wish Younger Horses had pushed themselves further to deliver an even more exceptional experience.
Regardless of that, it’s an impressive achievement. Bugsnax in digital reality now offers a fully functional and immersive gaming experience, effortlessly accessible for players to dive into the fun. Regrettably, there are currently no plans in place for Younger Horses to port Bugsnax VR to alternative platforms, including Meta Quest, PS VR2, or Apple Vision Pro; a move to other formats would undoubtedly be welcome news.
To gain access to the free Bugsnax VR beta, players must purchase a copy of the game on PC via Steam, where it currently enjoys a 72% discount on the platform. After successfully downloading the sports app, navigate to its properties and insert the precise code ‘virtualreality’ to unlock advanced features. You’ll need to determine which department to enter the VR model of the sport into.
There is currently no confirmation that the sport will be available on various VR platforms, but.
