Blackmagic Design’s Apple Immersive Video camera is now available for preorder, with DaVinci Resolve Studio set to support editing it next year.
The Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive digicam made its debut at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in 2024. The new update would allow for independent producers to create Apple Immersive Video content without relying solely on Apple’s proprietary cameras, which were previously the only means of capturing such content under contract with the tech giant.
The Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive camera captures stunning footage in an 8160×7200 resolution, equivalent to 58.7 million pixels, when paired with lenses operating at 90 frames per second and recording a single file per capture – a staggering 5 billion pixels captured every second. The camera boasts 16 stops of dynamic range, rivaling the finest professional digital cameras once utilized in shooting major motion pictures, allowing it to capture details in both extremely bright and remarkably dark regions of a scene with equal precision.
The Digicam features an impressive 8TB of built-in storage, capable of storing over two hours of RAW footage at stereoscopic 8K resolution and a high frame rate of 90FPS. Additionally, it supports “excessive pace” Wi-Fi connectivity with dual antennas or 10 gigabit ethernet for seamless networking, including Blackmagic Cloud storage options.
Blackmagic’s URSA Cine camera is capable of outputting immersive data, which can be converted to the brand-new Blackmagic RAW Immersive file format. This new format will be natively supported by DaVinci Resolve Studio video editing software, with support planned for Q1 2025. The new feature will enable real-time monitoring of Apple ProRes RAW footage edited in the DaVinci Resolve Studio timeline directly from the Apple Imagination Professional device, allowing for seamless rendering of native Apple Immersive Video content.
Blackmagic announces that its latest digicam, paired with the updated DaVinci Resolve software, provides a genuine end-to-end workflow for creating Apple Immersive Video content. While the camera’s $29,995 price tag may be inaccessible to most individual creators, it presents a relatively affordable option for professional production studios looking to start capturing high-quality immersive video in 2025.
