AMD’s newly released Ryzen 9000 processors, along with certain existing Ryzen CPUs, are experiencing a Windows user account-related issue, causing them to run slower in gaming situations depending on the type of user account being used. A motherboard is holding back performance by a margin of 4% on the latest Ryzen 9 7000X processor, but a fix is on the horizon, and several workarounds exist to alleviate the issue.
A newly discovered AMD CPU bug has significantly impacted the performance and reception of AMD’s latest processors, which were previously considered among the best gaming CPUs on the market.
The bug was discovered by multiple testers, including Hardware Unboxed and Antony Leatherwood of Forbes, who reported that common body charges increased dramatically – from 155 frames per second (fps) when using a standard user account to 161 fps when utilizing an administrator account.
The tech publication {Hardware} Unboxed has independently corroborated the issues affecting Ryzen 7000 processors based on Zen 4 architecture, but notes that the performance impact is significantly less severe than initially reported. While the potential impact may also apply to older Ryzen processors, we haven’t yet tested or verified this assumption.
While the efficiency gap may appear relatively minor within the grand scheme of things, it still represents a notable misstep for AMD. Fortunately, users can circumvent the performance penalty by running under an admin account, and AMD has promised that the issue will be resolved in a forthcoming Windows update.
While information is limited regarding the impact of this issue on earlier Windows versions, all available testing has focused solely on Windows 11 platforms to date.
To rectify the Windows issue affecting Ryzen 9000 performance and grant elevated privileges to an administrator-level user account, follow these steps:
- Type “Run” and then type “cmd” in the search box. Click on the “cmd” shortcut to open the Command Prompt directly.
- Run command: C:\Windows\System32\web.exe consumer administrator /energetic:sure
- Shut down Windows.
- When creating a new administrator account, it’s essential to note that you’ll need to reconfigure and reinstall all applications and data, similar to setting up a fresh account from scratch.
