Although Kraven the Hunter hasn’t yet been released, a recent report suggests that Sony has seemingly concluded work on its Spider-Man: Universe of Marvel Characters (SUMC) initiative for the time being?
The Sony Universe of Marvel Characters (SUMC) will likely be remembered for several reasons, including its unconventional name, featuring films centered around characters that lack widespread appeal, and ultimately yielding significant financial losses. Will Kraven’s Last Hunt remain the most recent entry in the Spider-Man-less Spider-Verse when it drops on Friday the 13th, significantly? The report from TheWrap appears to confirm that this will indeed be Sony’s last attempt at building a shared universe of Spider-Man affiliated characters.
A prime expertise agent reportedly shared with TheWrap that Sony has finalized its plans for the time being, focusing on the next Spider-Man movie, which will be Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and set for release in July 2026. As part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the film will be co-produced by Sony. A Sony insider revealed to TheWrap that besides targeting Spider-Man 4, the corporation may also focus on honing in on Past the Spider-Verse, the upcoming animated sequel with no release date yet, and Spider-Man Noir, a live-action Amazon series starring Nicolas Cage as the titular character.
Clearly evident here is a renewed focus on Spider-Man, the beloved character, rather than his antagonists or supporting figures that receive limited attention. After that although? Who is aware of! I’m confident it won’t include Morbius either.
