The latest patch for Helldivers 2, version 01.001.104, brings a range of updates to weapon handling, but one modification in particular has garnered significant attention: the revamped P-4 Senator, a double-action revolver that’s seen its performance supercharged. As a result, countless players have been inspired to channel their inner John Wayne and take up the mantle of rugged, lawman-like heroes.
The patch upgrade significantly enhanced the gun’s performance by increasing its armor penetration to 4, expanding projectile damage to a maximum of 200, and boosting projectile sturdy damage to 70. The end result? As a galactic force, harnessing the capacity to vanquish formidable foes like Bile Titans, hulks, and spark widespread meme-based ridicule across the cosmos with an onslaught of visuals that leave no room for doubt regarding the scale of this unparalleled performance.
Although that was simply stage one, further development and refinement were needed to truly realize its potential. As discussions on Helldivers 2’s subreddit unfolded over the past couple of days, gamers exhibited a distinct pattern of emotional responses, which I’ve dubbed the “buff response Kübler-Ross model” – a four-stage progression mirroring the stages of grieving.
As stage two got underway, concerns arose among players about whether recent changes had inadvertently rendered the Senator character overpowered. The thrill of encountering a behemoth Bile Titan has waned, as its proximity to obsolescence diminishes the sense of trepidation and wonder. It’s too fragile.”
Following stage three, Reddit mimicked Twitter’s “retweet to dunk on a factor you suppose is dumb” phenomenon, which often yields hilarious posts. Users shared humorous takes on those who claimed the gun was overpowered, revealing their initial concerns were unfounded.
“Without exception, I firmly believe this armor stands unscathed,” stated one individual, “The notion that using it against AP4 enemies, including Hulks, is wishful thinking due to the insufficient damage output.” This design facilitates additional harm when functioning as intended, offering moderate clarity with an added layer of anti-heavy utility. The team subsequently explored various sidearm options, each possessing characteristics that would make one a preferred choice over the Senator in specific situations.
Stage 4, or alternatively stages 4 and 5 depending on the categorization approach employed, logically builds upon the preceding levels. Should this modification to the senator imply anything regarding modifications to various weapons and tactics moving forward? While some factions advocated for a boost in armor penetration for prominent vessels such as the Slugger and Dominator, maintaining parity with their firepower.
Others appeared to strongly disagree, suggesting that Arrowhead should not attempt this endeavor. Making major weapons, excluding flamethrowers and Constitution, AP4-capable would overwhelmingly outclass each unique major weapon. This could render certain loadouts obsolete, as players might opt for a single weapon capable of delivering armor-piercing attacks instead of carrying multiple options. In extreme cases, it could even surpass the effectiveness of certain assist weapons, which would be unprecedented.
As the debate rages on, it seems increasingly likely that we will ultimately agree that high-level players should prioritize granting level 4 AP status to either the Eruptor or an equivalent bolt-action sniper rifle.
While these events unfold, the divers surprisingly manage to resurface at the forefront, their mission accomplished in a timely manner. Good.
