Shortly following the release of Larian’s official modding toolkit for Baldur’s Gate 3, a modder swiftly discovered how to access developer mode, allowing users to perform tasks such as customizing encounters? As modding efforts progress, initial details start emerging for the first few areas, including an early concept model of Avernus.
If you’ve been out of the loop, the modding tools arrived with Patch 7 for BG3, along with a plethora of other updates – although they may not have addressed every concern from the Durge community.
With the release of Siegfre’s ‘BG3 Toolkit Unlocked’, several modders have started sharing their initial creations – customized maps – as a result of this enhanced toolkit, which has opened up new possibilities for degree-based enhancements.
What has garnered significant attention among the findings thus far is a bespoke Avernus model crafted by Reddit user katszenBurger, which sheds new light on the origins of Karlach. Check out the work-in-progress map and a video showcasing Astarion’s progress on it – you can view them below.

The modder shared their vision for a lava-filled space, noting that they’ve deliberately crafted an explorable lake – albeit a vast, open one – drawing inspiration from Elden Ring’s Caelid; fans will likely recognize this influence. In their explanation, they also provided a glimpse into how such maps are collectively crafted within the toolkit’s editor, remarking: “Skybox/ambiance/shadows are globally managed; menus allow you to configure scatter and fog effects, among other things…The mountains and clouds in this instance are mesh objects.” Are the mountains and buildings in this scene actually the same reused mesh as seen in other Avernus scenes?
Having attempted to craft two maps – initially attempting a fortress, their first creative endeavour. I’ve also discovered a post by another modder, Lotrich3, who has been working on a scenic forest clearing with a ship, as seen in this video, showcasing their creative endeavors.
The post suggested by katszenBurger read: “It appears that the unlocked editor could be incredibly promising for customized campaigns. I hope this implies we’ll eventually receive some fully-fledged user-made DLC or new campaigns, reminiscent of those found in the Skyrim modding scene.”
You’re blown away by the creativity of Baldur’s Gate 3 modders who’ve crafted custom maps that rival the originals, wondering if they’ll tackle specific locations or areas next. Tell us beneath.
