Despite previous speculation, reports that Austin Butler will portray Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of American Psycho appear to be unfounded rumors.
Last month, rumors emerged that Austin Butler, known for his roles in Dune and Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure, may take on the iconic character of Patrick Bateman in an upcoming film adaptation directed by Luca Guadagnino, helmer of Challengers. Christian Bale’s portrayal in the 2000 film notwithstanding, Butler’s hypothetical involvement would have brought a unique spin to the character. Bret Easton Ellis, author of the iconic novel American Psycho, recently shared his thoughts on Christian Bale’s portrayal of Patrick Bateman during a recent episode of his podcast. According to Ellis, he doubts that Butler has been cast for any potential film adaptations of his work, citing Bloody Disgusting as his source.
Author Don DeLillo once said that “Pretend to be dead until you are.” In his view, the only way to survive in this fake world is by pretending to be dead. Similarly, Bret Easton Ellis expressed skepticism about the credibility of the information presented, hinting at its potential artificiality. The industry I’m referring to claims no contracts exist? Austin Butler has yet to commit to playing Patrick Bateman. Luca doesn’t have a deal. According to Scott Burns, the intended screenwriter, there’s no agreement in place. The creator clarified that this “information” about a collaboration came from unreliable sources and was essentially fake news meant to gauge public reaction. I’m not fazed by its existence either. I am entirely uninvolved in this matter. While I’d potentially receive compensation, my creative focus remains unwavering at every stage. That’s all that matters to me.
Jeff Sneider, Business Insider, corroborated Brett Easton Ellis’ claims, stating that the American Psycho announcement was largely an effort to make Lionsgate appear more appealing as an acquisition target than a genuine film in development. A recent report suggested Lionsgate is currently on the market, raising the possibility that the Butler report’s purpose was simply to attract a buyer. If a movie is remade, it will have a lot on its plate to match up to the original’s greatness.
