For nearly two decades, Monolith Soft has thrived as a first-party Nintendo developer, and by 2011, Nintendo’s ownership had grown to encompass a staggering 96 percent of the studio’s shares. Although Nintendo holds a significant majority stake in the studio, a small residual percentage – specifically 4% – remains with the original co-founders: Hirohide Sugiura, Tetsuya Takahashi, and Yasuyuki Honne.
However, it seems that this assumption is not supported by the evidence. Confirmed: Monolith Soft’s website now reveals that Nintendo has acquired a full 100% stake in the studio. Despite the formalities, this development ultimately holds little practical significance, given Nintendo’s existing control over the studio; however, on paper, Monolith Soft is now fully absorbed into Nintendo’s ownership.
The studio’s subsequent launch, scheduled to hit the Nintendo Switch in March, is eagerly anticipated. The prospects of Monolith Gentle’s next massive creation remain uncertain, but speculation points to a potential unveiling at the launch window of Nintendo’s next-generation console, anticipated in 2025.
