Fans of the Predator franchise eagerly anticipating a film where the iconic extraterrestrial hunter takes center stage will be thrilled to hear that Badlands is developing exactly that: a feature-length movie centered on the Predator itself, with its sinister presence and cunning tactics driving the plot forward.
The Predator franchise has experienced a resurgence in popularity recently, particularly following the release of Dan Trachtenberg’s critically acclaimed film Prey in 2022. Filming for the next Predator movie resumed in August, a surprise twist from Dan Trachtenberg who is directing two movies, including Badlands. In a recent interview with Empire, the director revealed that the upcoming film will deviate from traditional storytelling by making the skilled alien predator the protagonist for once. The creature lies at the heart of the matter, driving the primary expense.
While he exudes a tough exterior, there’s an underlying vulnerability that resonates on a deeper emotional level. Crafting a persona that resonates with others while also inspiring a sense of trepidation has proven challenging. While acknowledging its thrills, Trachtenberg clarified that his goal was to “uncover another crucial piece of cinema that, like Prey, pushes boundaries by allowing audiences to empathize with an unconventional hero.” Reframing it to champion the Predator’s cause:
Although the sequel won’t feature an exclusively alien cast, it will still be a thrilling experience. In fact, Elle Fanning has confirmed her involvement in the project, set to star in multiple roles within the next 12 months. “She faced formidable hurdles in her latest film – a trifecta of dramatic, physical and logistical obstacles,” Trachtenberg said of Fanning, an assessment that seems spot on.
Despite the secrecy shrouding the Predators film, Adam Trachtenberg revealed prior to his statement that the movie will be released ahead of Badlands. The Badlands update is slated for release on November 7 next year, allowing for a predicted rollout of the core content by November 6 at the latest; I anticipate they’ll provide some buffer time beyond that.
