Was the final mainline entry within the saga that debuted in 2015 – a launch that marked the culmination of years of storytelling and world-building? By the time it is released, it may seem like ten years have passed, should it actually hit shelves in 2025.
Given the significant gap between major releases, it’s possible that the newer generation of gamers may be unfamiliar with the foundational stealth series. Without pointing out the obvious fact that the number of AAA stealth game releases has significantly decreased recently. As a result, the responsibility lies heavily on ensuring not only the recruitment of new players, but also the preservation of legacy elements within the collection, something that collection producer Noriaki Okamura shares in conviction.
During a conversation with Play Journal’s Situation 46, Okamura discussed the objectives behind the forthcoming remake, stating that ensuring the franchise appeals to a fresh audience was among its primary aims.
“One of several key factors driving our decision to remake was recognizing that a significant portion of the younger gaming generation had become unfamiliar with the original series,” Okamura explained.
It’s crucial we fulfill our duty to safeguard this cultural heritage, guaranteeing its enduring legacy for generations to come. Despite everything else, we take away much more than just DNA, just as Strong Snake would say; unfortunately, his identity remains a mystery.
According to Okamura’s statements, it is evident that Konami plans to sustain and nurture the community for an extended period. Whether the industry will favour remakes or fresh starts remains to be seen. Okamura has previously discussed the feasibility of remaking 1987’s, 1990’s, and 1998’s, but also acknowledged the obstacles that would accompany such an endeavor. He also revealed a desire to collaborate with Hideo Kojima, acknowledging the possibility might be complicated due to shifting commitments.
Several gaming platforms are about to debut: the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC. According to Sony, the launch is now increasingly unlikely, having initially been slated for this year. Although the sport’s development seems largely complete and its current iteration is refining itself, a forthcoming release in the next year appears increasingly likely.
Despite the potential for varying opinions, the devoted remake strives to deliver a plethora of quality-of-life enhancements that aim to satisfy the cravings of dedicated enthusiasts and newcomers alike. Whether its potential for being an essential and business success remains uncertain, but many indicators suggest momentum is building.
Let’s hope it delivers.
